As part of a wider digital transformation roadmap, we designed and built YouSpec, an interactive product configurator tightly integrated with VDC’s ecommerce platform. Built using Laravel, the system allows customers to design, customise, and order complex cable assemblies online, guiding users through each stage of the build process. Real-time visuals and live pricing update dynamically as users design their product. Each configuration is validated against live product data and then submitted directly to the basket for checkout. Orders are synchronised with Sage via secure APIs, ensuring stock, pricing, and order data remain consistent across all systems. The user interface was designed with clarity and technical precision in mind — using a dark, grid-based layout that reflects the engineering nature of VDC’s products, while maintaining a clean, modern experience for users. Hosting is managed on AWS with Laravel Forge, providing performance, reliability, and scalability.
YouSpec has transformed how VDC sells bespoke products online. What once required multiple emails or phone calls can now be completed in minutes through an intuitive, visual interface. Trade customers can log in, configure complex assemblies, and instantly view live pricing — with orders flowing directly into Sage for seamless processing and fulfilment. Internally, VDC’s sales and production teams now benefit from automated, accurate specifications and a significantly reduced administrative workload. YouSpec has become a cornerstone of VDC’s digital strategy — an innovative example of how custom-built configurators can deliver cost benefits at many levels.
